General Indications for Massage
Relieves fatigue

Prevents atrophy of muscles as long as nerve supply is present

Physical Effects of Massage
Circulatory System:
Enhances venous return, Reduces blood pressure and heart rate with regular relaxation massage;

Digestive System:
Improves movement of contents in Large Intestine, Better digestion with relaxation;

Nervous System:
Stimulates parasympathetic nervous system (relaxation), Reduces pain (neural-gating mechanism) and Increases body awareness;

Endocrine System:
Release of endorphins (also involves nervous system), Increases dopamine for fine motor coordination, Increases human growth hormone for healing, Increases serotonin for sleep cycles and decreases cortisol stress hormones;

Integumentary System (Skin): Stimulates sensory receptors in the skin, Increases superficial circulation, Removes dead skin, Adds moisture with oil or lotion and Increases sebaceous gland secretions;

Connective Tissue (Fascia) :
Fascia connects everything in the body, wrapping, supporting, guiding, providing boundaries. Massage Improves pliability of fascia and separates tissues.

Muscular System: "Milks" metabolic wastes into venous and lymph flow, Decreases muscular tension, relaxes muscles ( general and specific) and Relieves myo-fascial Trigger points;

Skeletal System:
Increases joint mobility and flexibility;

Immune System:
Increases lymphatic flow and Improves immune function via stress redaction;

Massage also affects Mental and Emotional aspects by:
* Increasing relaxation ( Increasing Alpha waves);
* Increases the sense of well-being;
* Decreases Anxiety;
* Releases suppressed emotions (cellular memory);

Cautions and Contraindications

What are the contraindications to massage?
Massage is non-invasive, relaxing and natural. It is therefore generally considered a safe treatment for most people. However, there are three types of contraindication: TOTAL, when massage should not be performed at all, LOCAL, when massage can be performed but not over the contraindicated areas and MEDICAL, when massage can only be performed once medical permission has been granted.

Total Contraindications
When you have any of these conditions you should NOT get a massage:
* Fever
* Contagious or infectious diseases
* Under the influence of drugs or alcohol
* Recent operations
* Neuritis
* Skin diseases

The therapist can massage but not over any areas affected by:
* Varicose veins
* Undiagnosed lumps or bumps
* Pregnancy
* Bruising
* Cuts
* Abrasions
* Sunburn
* Undiagnosed pain
* Inflammation

If you suffer from any of the following conditions, massage can only take place once it has been approved by a Physician.
* Cardio-vascular conditions (Thrombosis, Phlebitis, Hypertension, Heart conditions)
* Any condition already being treated by a medical practitioner
* Oedema
* Psoriasis or eczema
* High blood pressure
* Osteoporosis
* Cancer
* Nervous or Psychotic conditions
* Heart problems, angina, those with pacemakers
* Epilepsy
* Diabetes
* Bell’s palsy, trapped or pinched nerves
* Gynecological infections

Contraindications of Hot Stone Massage
Hot Stone Massage is not suitable for everyone. Please review the list of contraindications below. If any of these conditions apply to you, then you should not receive Hot Stone Massage.
*Blood clots / prone to blood clots
*Bruise easily
*Cancer, chemotherapy or radiations treatments
*Depressed immune system (lupus, HIV/AIDS, cancer, Epstein Barr, mononucleosis, etc.)
*Heart problems
*Heat Sensitivity
*High Blood Pressure
*Inflamed Skin Conditions
*Nerve Trauma
*Open wounds or sores
*Peripheral vascular disorder
*Recent Surgery
*Taking medications that have side effects to heat (Please check with your pharmacist if you are not certain.)
*Varicose veins

If you have any doubt that Hot Stone Massage is safe for you, please check with your doctor before receiving this modality.

All manual contraindications apply for Hot Stone Massage.

Contraindications and Cautions of Deep Tissue Massage:
Atherosclerosis, Arteriosclerosis, Autoimmune diseases ( Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Scleroderma, Ankylosing)Bipolar Disorder, Borderline, Cerebral Palsy, Cancer, Connective tissue disease ( E.g. osteomyelitis, lupus, scleroderma), Diabetes, Embolism or Thrombus, Epileptics, Headaches, Heart conditions, Hemangioma, Herpes (and other potentially infectious skin conditions, including warts), High blood pressure (extreme), Impaired elimination systems, Intervertebral disc problems, I.U.D., Menstruation (if strong), Pain medication, Varicose veins, Pregnancy, Whiplash.

* Abscess teeth (no intraoral work)
* Aneurysm
* Bone fractures or acute soft tissue injuries: wait for full healing (6 weeks - 3 months)
* Clients on Cortisone: (wait 2-3 months)
* Feverish clients
* Hemophiliacs
* Hodgkin's disease (cancer of lymph system)
* Inflammatory conditions (includes such things as tendonitis and bursitis; contraindicated during acute stages; work peripheral to site possible when inflammation has subsided)
* Infectious conditions (with some exceptions, like HIV: get medical supervision)
* Leukemia
* Osteoporosis (usually found in post-menopausal women)
* Phlebitis: same risk as for 'embolism or thrombus'
* Recent scar tissue (including regular or plastic surgeries): no work on this area until scarring process is complete (usually at least 6 weeks).

*If you have any doubt that Deep Tissue Massage is safe for you, please check with your doctor before receiving this modality.

*All manual contraindications apply for Deep Tissue Massage.

You must inform us of any condition you have or have had in the last 6 months. This includes pregnancy, skin conditions, surgeries, injuries and medications!
